So I got sick.
It's lucky I decided to stop the daily blog posts when I did, since Thursday's post would have been all: threw up again...watched videos on YouTube...threw up...slept...threw up...watched Netflix...slept.
I don't know what happened. I woke up in the morning and had to run to the bathroom to be sick, but I was in total denial that I had a stomach bug from something I ate. I never had the slightest hint of a stomach issue when we were in Thailand for over a month in 2018 and, besides, didn't I just read that the water in Bangkok is actually safe to drink? Not that I've been drinking unboiled tap water—or salads—but still, I haven't been too concerned.
I also wasn't feeling too achy or depleted, so I thought, it can't be a stomach bug. We'd walked like eleven miles the day before—maybe I was just worn out. And, uh, throwing up because of it.
But after couple hours, I couldn't deny that I was sick. I couldn't keep anything in my stomach (even soda water), and periodically I would get so nauseous I'd have to run to the bathroom to throw up. Also, I wonder if maybe the weakness we feel when we're sick with a travel bug is just a result of not being able to eat anything, and the achiness is a result of all the painful retching? Either way, by the end of the day, I did feel all the exhaustion and muscle pain I associate with being sick-while-traveling (India schooled me pretty well on this).
Roman was, of course, lovely, bringing me water and soda water, and watching comforting low-stakes British reality television with me.
And, thankfully, I woke up Friday morning feeling better. Still weak, and kind of mentally dull, but I was able to get up and get on with the day.
No, Roman hasn't gotten tired of this pink sparkly filter yet |
But! Roman did eat some fun things while I was convalescing.
Sticky bun with pecans |
Purple sticky rice and skewered liver and chicken hearts |
Also, look at these cute petite baskets they have at 7-Eleven.
Perfect size for that one bag of chips |
For my first post-sickness meal out, I wanted something gentle and bland. We went to a street food cart complex, and the best I could find was noodle soup with slow-cooked beef, liver, and fish balls. And actually, I felt much better after I ate it.
